Redtrasex participated through Executive Secretary Elena Reynaga in a regional Workshop on HIV approaches for emergencies held in Panama City and organized by ONUAIDS on June 14th and 15th.
Actions on emergencies such as HIV related issues regarding natural and political crisis were considered. Regional networks such as the Red Cross and Doctors of the World participated among others. “The fact that all regional networks were invited to start working together was paramount, because catastrophes and crises such as the more recent ones occurred in Honduras, Colombia and Haiti are suffered most by women and children.
There are not enough people with experience on these matters, which is the reason why we are convened to help set the foundations for networks being part of the UNETE initiative” claimed Redtrasex Executive Secretary.
During the workshop civil society representatives put forward their proposals. One of them was to hold another meeting where networks could present themselves and concretely explain what they do. Elena Reynaga considered they had had little time to prepare themselves and that was the reason why such proposal came up: “some government officials still show a high level of prejudice on some issues, so it will be very important to work on such gatherings”.
