Prevention of HIV / AIDS for road transport workers

Fellows from Fundación Margen with various social actors met in ILO to discuss policies for the prevention of HIV and AIDS in road transport sector.

On August 22, at the ILO headquarters was carried out the seminar "Social Dialogue with Civil Society: Building a national policy on HIV and AIDS in the transport sector", which was attended by representatives from government, industry, Trade unions, employers and organizations linked to HIV and AIDS in the country, including Fundación Huésped and the Trans Independent Union "Amanda Cofré".

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and collect the main suggestions to the first draft of the national guidelines on HIV and AIDS in the road transport sector, which was developed by a tripartite board of the transport sector in the context of The ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work (2010). Because of their high mobility and lack of prevention services, these workers can experience greater vulnerabilities, and the process of agreeing these guidelines reflects the strong support of the ILO’s tripartite constituents around this issue.

"This was the first meeting we do to prepare the proposal. We gave our views, with particular emphasis on how to reach women of truckers with HIV / AIDS prevention”, said Herminda Gonzalez, representative of the Foundation.
